Random text chat: type first, go on cam later

Random text chat on MeetCamChat pairs you with one girl and lets you type before anyone sees or hears anything. Pick Text on the match screen, say hello, and if it clicks, move to voice or camera later. Messages can translate automatically, so a language gap is rarely a dead end.

What happens in a random text chat here?

It is the Text mode of the match screen: the site pairs you with one girl who is free, and the two of you type. Your camera and microphone stay off. It is the quietest way to meet someone here, and the slowest in a good way: both of you get time to think.

There are no chat rooms or group threads. Every conversation is you and one other person, which makes it easier to say something real. She never sees your face, and since you start as a guest, your real name stays out of it unless you type it, which is as close to anonymous text chat as a site full of real people gets.

For the camera version there is random cam chat, and the MeetCamChat home page puts every option side by side.

Starting a text match

Four taps and a sentence. That is genuinely all it takes.

  1. Open the match screen

Tap Start a text match. You arrive as a guest, and no form comes first.

  2. Switch to Text

The modes sit along the bottom of the match screen. Tap Text before you start the search.

  3. Write a real first line

Something specific beats hi. There are examples further down this page.

  4. Give her a moment

She might be typing. If nothing comes back after a while, leave the chat and start again.

Why text strangers first?

Because sometimes you cannot talk out loud, or you do not want to be seen yet. Text works on a bus, in a shared flat at midnight or in a café with terrible music. It also gives shy people a minute to warm up before a voice or a face is involved.

Your roommate is home, the walls are thin, and you are in the mood to meet someone new. Ten minutes of typing to a girl in Santo Domingo is a quiet evening that still feels like an evening.

Some people prefer to text random people simply because writing lets them be wittier than they are out loud. Typing also gives you an edit button you never get out loud: you can reread a message before you send it. If you came to meet someone rather than pass the time, the meet chat guide covers how to keep in touch afterwards.

When she writes in another language

Text messages on MeetCamChat can be translated automatically. With translation switched on, a message she writes in Spanish or Tagalog appears in your language, so each of you can read the other without a dictionary open in another tab.

Voice and camera are not translated. If you move up from text with someone who speaks another language, slow down, keep your sentences short and let your hands help. Pointing at things works better than you would expect.

First lines that get replies

In text, your first line is all she has to go on. Make it something she can actually answer.

  • I need a tiebreaker: pineapple on pizza, yes or no?
  • What are you doing up at this hour? I can’t sleep either.
  • Tell me one thing about your city that tourists always get wrong.
  • Honest first impression of my username, go.

Skip one-word openers, and do not send five messages in a row before she has replied. Give her a beat; good replies take a few seconds to type.

Is it safe to text chat with strangers?

Mostly, as long as you keep personal details out of it. In Text mode she cannot see you, and you start as a guest, so the only things she learns are what you type. Skip anyone who asks for your number, photos or money, and report anyone who keeps pushing.

Be wary of links, too. A stranger who sends you a link in the first minute is rarely sending anything good. Beyond that, a conversation in text is still a conversation with a real person, so the usual manners apply: answer what she asked, and leave politely when you are done.

How do you move from text to cam?

Ask. If the chat is going well, say you would like to hear her voice or see her, and let her decide. Then follow her so you can find her again, and either start your next match in Audio or Video or open her profile and start a chat directly from there.

There is no rush. Some of the best conversations stay in text for days. When you are ready for voice, read the random voice chat guide first; it covers headphones and those awkward first seconds.

As in any chat, keep your surname, address and workplace out of it. The safety page lists the warning signs worth acting on.

Typing etiquette

Typing, explained briefly.

Is text chat one to one?

Yes. Each Text match pairs you with one girl. There are no group rooms, and nobody else reads the conversation.

Can I text chat without a camera?

Yes. Text mode does not use your camera or microphone at all, so you can type from anywhere, even with someone asleep in the next room.

Do messages translate automatically?

Text messages can, so each of you can read the other in your own language. Voice and camera chats are not translated.

What if she doesn’t reply?

Give it a little time, since she may be typing or thinking. If nothing comes back, leave the chat and start a new match. It is rarely about you.

Can I type in my own language?

Yes. Write the way you normally would. If she reads a different language and translation is on, your message can appear translated for her.

How long should I wait for a reply?

A minute or so is normal, since people type at different speeds. If nothing comes after that, leave the chat and start again; no reason needed.

Is Text mode good on weak mobile data?

It is the most forgiving mode. Typed messages need very little data compared with a camera picture, so Text keeps working when video would stutter.
